Gunky McMann AKA “Larry”
Passed away at home on 4 April 2023, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents Paul McMann, Naomi McMann, and his wife Karon McMann. He is survived by his daughters Kelley and Shannon McMann, his sister Sheri Pasterick (Gregg), and brother in life Forrest Johnson. Gunky also leaves behind his grandchildren Steven Awtrey, Coral Richardson, and Allen Awtrey, nieces and nephews Nina White, Shawn McCombs, Leah Hoffman, Travis Johnson, and Jessica Johnson. Gunky was born in Jackson, Ohio on 25 January 1947. His family moved to Columbus when he was a teenager where he graduated from Brook Haven High in Columbus, Ohio then joined the Air Force. He served four years including a tour in Vietnam as an a/c mechanic on the F4 Phantom. He left the military as a SSGT E5 and ended up in Key Largo in the early 70’s. After working in construction for a few years, he started his own business and began Keys Crane Service in 1972. He worked in the crane business with his longtime friend and business partner John Kuehl for over 40 years. Over the years, Gunky’s adventures included Airboating in the Everglades, mounting fish at “Trophy Master Marine Mounts,” and being a licensed gun dealer at “Gunky’s Guns and Ammo.” He also enjoyed blowing up fireworks, hunting at Brahma Island, jumping cars with the “Dukes of Key Largo”, commercial lobster fishing, racing swamp buggies with “G.O.F. Racing”, selling hot dogs on the sandbar on “Gunky’s Dog House”, and running a restaurant. He loved the open ocean and raised his girls in the Everglades. He finally retired three years ago. Gunky will be cremated and a huge celebration of life will be held at Larocco 101075 Overseas Highway, Key Largo on 3 June 2023. We will be celebrating through the day beginning at 1 p.m., food will be served at 4 with a service to follow, then on to the Caribbean Club for sunset.
